About Practical Driving Test

The driving test lasts for approximately 40 minutes and is designed to make you the driver show your practical skills and the understanding of the theory behind it along side the Highway Code. The examiner sat in the car with you will be looking for the overall safe standard of driving.

NOTE: There are no pass of fail quotas!

The test starts off with an ability check on the following:

  1. Sight check by the examiner asking you to read out a number plate on a car at the required distance. If you can not read the number plate you will not carry on with the test.
  2. Asking to show and or tell how to do certain vehicle checks. The examiner will ask you one ‘show me’ question, where you’ll have to show them how you’d carry out a vehicle safety check. You’ll also be asked one ‘tell me’ question, where you’ll have to explain to the examiner how you’d carry out the check.

The driving will last around 40 minutes and the examiner will give you directions to follow. You will be taken along routes of various traffic and surrounding conditions and you may be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

The examiner will test your reversing skills by either:

  • Parallel parking behind a parked car or into a parking bay (left or right).
  • Reversing round a corner.
  • Turn in the road

When you take your practical test you will need to take both parts of your driving license (paper and plastic) along with your theory test certificate. Failure to produce these on your test will result in you being unable to take the test. I will explain everything in much more detail nearer the time.

Vehicles you can’t use in the test

If you are planning on using your own car there are some that cannot be used for safety reasons. You’ll need to check that a recall or safety notice does not affect the car you want to use.

If you pass

The examiner will keep your provisional licence and your full driving licence will be sent through the post within 4 weeks. You will be issued a pass certificate to prove you have passed your driving test.

You can then go onto take your pass plus test with me if you wish. For more information on what the test involves click on the link below.
